Both styles are still darts, but the playing experience is not exactly the same. The board, distance, scoring, weight and maintenance can all feel different.

What are steel tip darts?

Steel tip darts are the traditional version used in most professional darts matches. They have a sharp metal point that sticks into a bristle dartboard, usually made from sisal fibers. This is the format most players associate with classic 501, legs, sets and televised darts.

Steel tip darts are often preferred by players who want the most traditional match experience. Because the darts lands in a bristle board, the throw can feel more direct and natural than on a electronic soft tip board.

This makes steel tip a popular choice for players who want to practice in conditions that are close to standard competitive darts.

What are soft tip darts?

Soft tip darts have a plastic tip and are designed for electronic dartboards. The board registers where the darts hit and usually keeps score automatically. This makes soft tip darts popular in darts, arcades, casual home setups and social play.

Soft tip darts are often lighter than steel tip darts and the board surface deels different. Because the board is electronic, some rules can also differ, especially around whether a dart still counts after it bounces out.

Steel tip on electronic boards

You cannot use steel tip darts on any electronic board. This is because the board is designed for plastic tip darts. Only use steel tip darts on a board that is specifically made to handle them.

The reverse is also important: soft tip darts are not meant for traditional bristle boards unless you use conversion points. Always match the dart type to the board type to protect your equipment and keep the game fair.

Which darts to chose?

Beginners should choose based on where they will play most. If you want to practice traditional darts at home and improve for pub or league-style games, choose steel tip darts and a bristle board. If you want automatic scoring, safer tips and casual games with friends, soft tip darts can be a good starting point.

For serious training, steel tip often gives the most transferable experience. For low-friction play, soft tip can be more accessible. Neither option is automatically better: the right choice depends on your setup and playing goals.
